<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">Have students watch the video on freedom of expression in China.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">If you are teaching Academic English you might want to remind them of the criteria for note-taking (on the powerpoint download at the bottom the page).</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"> </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">The video is 18 mins long so it's quite challenging for most students to remain engaged and actively taking notes. A copy of key points/ notes and headings is available from the pdf download at the bottom of this page. Depending on what your aims are, you might want to break the video up into the section headings and check notes after each section.</span><br />
<br />

<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" mozallowfullscreen="" scrolling="no" src="http://embed.ted.com/talks/lang/en/michael_anti_behind_the_great_firewall_of_china.html" webkitallowfullscreen="" width="560"></iframe>
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">Get students to peer check their notes and refer back the criteria for note-taking.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">They can then compare their notes to the example notes.</span><br />
<br />
<b><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">Speaking:</span></b><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">Students compare freedom of speech in their country with the China. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">You could also have several statements on A3 paper about freedom of speech, such as:</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">"Can religion and freedom of speech co-exist?"</span></i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"><br /></span></i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">"Do you think the laws should be tighter about freedom of speech in social media?"</span></i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"><br /></span></i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">"Does anyone really have total freedom of speech?"</span></i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">Groups could discuss these statements (timed) and then write a summary of their discussion before passing the paper on to the next group who can then discuss the statement and the previous group's summary.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">An all skills<i> advanced </i>lesson on sweatshop production of fashion which uses video and an article from The Guardian.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<b><i><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">Listening > Vocabulary > Reading > Speaking </span></i></b><br />
<br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"> </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">Lead in:</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">Ask your students what they know about the brands listed on the worksheet or get them to name their favourite brands. Discuss which of these brands they believe offers value for money, the ethics of the brands and whether they know anything about the production of the products.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">Gist read:</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">Students skim through the article, highlight any key info and then orally summarise in pairs.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">Elicit the keys points as a class (you could work on paraphrasing at this point) and discuss their opinions on the points/ article.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">Vocabulary:</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">Students scan the article to find synonyms for the vocabulary on the worksheet - this quite a challenge for a lower advanced group so you could set this as homework or highlight the words in the text first. You could also work on pronunciation at this point.</span><br />
<br />
<iframe allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen" frameborder="0" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/OWio7NVOnaI" width="420"></iframe>
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">Video & listening:</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">The video focuses on Primark so if you don't have this brand in your country you might need to give them a bit of background info on it.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">Students watch the video from 13m05s to 29m53s and make notes on the key sections (worksheet).</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">Elicit all the main points and discuss opinions.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">Discussion</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">Use the discussion prompts to get students to extend their ideas on the topic. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">Follow-up:</span><br />
<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">A report on sweatshop production in your country/ for a particular brand.</span><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"> </span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">create a questionnaire about knowledge/ opinion on this topic and conduct some research - this could be used for an article/ blogpost on public opinion. </span><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"> </span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">Record a radio programme (use soundcloud or similar) with different guests; sweatshop worker, brand managing director, customer etc.</span></li>

<ul style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">
<li>What is slum tourism? Where is it happening?</li>
<li>Is slum tourism a new phenomenon? What has triggered it?</li>
<li>Highlight any pro's and con's of slum tourism mentioned in the text. </li>

<b>Vocabulary > Speaking > Video > Song</b></div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">
Lead-in:</div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">
You could...play the national anthems for the USA and UK and students guess the countries; show pictures of the Prime Minister/ President; brainstorm words associated with both countries; split your class into two groups, give one country to each and have them prepare clues/ hints about their country, then get the other team to guess.</div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">
Speaking tasks:</div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">
Students correct the mistakes in the questions on the worksheet (mostly articles or comparative grammar). They can then use the questions to discuss what they know about the USA.</div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">Move on to comparing the differences between the two countries.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">The final speaking part is an IELTS/ SfL monologue type task; give students a few minutes to prepare what they want to say about their topic and then time them to speak (for example for 2 minutes). Have their partner ask 2 questions are the end.</span><br />
<br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">Vocabulary:</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">I often use a worksheet from the (old) English File Upper-intermediate Teacher's book which has a vocabulary matching exercise but you could cut up cards with common words and have the students match them together (sidewalk/ pavement etc). There is a comprehensive list here: <a href="http://www.learnenglishfeelgood.com/usukenglish/">http://www.learnenglishfeelgood.com/usukenglish/</a></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">You could then look at some differences in spellings. Some good examples are:</span><br />

Set-up a debate:</div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">
<i> Is it better to have an American or British English accent?</i></div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">

Song:</div>

<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">Have the students share their paraphrasing or maybe get them to work in pairs.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">Finally, they can discuss any recommendations they would suggest.</span><br />

<br />
A video lesson about tattoos taken from the Miami Ink TV series. Would especially suit an older teenage group or adults but might not be appropriate for all groups.<br />
<br />
<br />
<b>Listening > vocabulary > speaking > pronunciation</b><br />
<br />
<br />

<br />
Lead-in.<br />
a. Ask students to come up with a definition for the word 'cool' - quite a hard task! Discuss their definitions as a class and then ask them to discuss the questions at the top of the worksheet.<br />
b. Show some pictures of tattoos and/or heavily tattooed people and elicit reaction to these (depends on your class and country, might not be appropriate) <br />
<br />
Main task:<br />
<br />
1. Model the dialogue on the worksheet (you could pre-record this using <a href="http://vocaroo.com/" target="_blank">vocaroo</a>, <a href="http://soundcloud.com/" target="_blank">soundcloud</a> or similar) and ask students to mark the stressed words and note any intonation they can.<br />
<br />
2. Students practise the dialogue in pairs and then ask for some volunteers to perform the dialogue<br />
<br />
3. Ask pairs to discuss the meaning of the words in red in the dialogue and elicit ideas. Give some synonyms or definitions on the board.<br />
<br />
4. Play <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zTxSDftIEdA" target="_blank">the first video clip</a> (to 1m17s) and ask them the discuss what Ami (the main speaker) says about tattoos.<br />
<br />
5. Ask your students to discuss what other types of body decoration they know of (eg henna, piercing)<br />
<br />
6. Play <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lm-QJE94tbw&feature=related" target="_blank">the second video clip</a> (to 2m26s) where Ami and Chris visit Hawaii to see a traditional tattoo artist.<br />
Ask students to work on the comprehension questions.<br />
<br />
7. Group/ pair students to discuss the questions on the worksheet and get feedback.<br />
<br />
<br />
Extension:<br />
Depends on the class and culture you are teaching in but you could ask them to research traditional and modern body decorations in different countries and present their findings in class or write-up on the class blog etc.<br />
They could write an article/ blog writing piece on 'tattoos in your culture' or a piece on traditional body decorations and their meanings.<br />

<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">
a. Ask the students what food they bought yesterday and how much of it they ate. </div>

<br />
Main Task:<br />
1. Elicit what a 'dumpster' is and then what a 'dumpster diver' could be.<br />
<br />
2. Students watch <a href="http://vimeo.com/33790355" target="_blank">the video </a>from <span style="font-family: "Segoe UI","sans-serif"; font-size: 11pt; line-height: 115%;">2m12s to 2m53 and check their ideas.</span><br />
<br />
<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">
<span style="font-size: small; line-height: 115%;">3. Pre-teach vocabulary using the vocab matching task on the worksheet. Model and drill any pronunciation.</span></div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">
<span style="font-size: small; line-height: 115%;">4. Play the whole video a few times and ask students to work on note-taking and the comprehension questions. </span><br />

<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">
<span style="font-size: small; line-height: 115%;">5. Check answers and elicit reaction to the video (I've has some varied responses and some students have reacted strongly).</span></div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">
<span style="font-size: small; line-height: 115%;">6. Group or pair students for the discussion questions.</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi83W70WAMMKv2z_AE7TeJHzs5X7QVgkCYBr1QVf2vRqshlQ3IiMCD1HL6WQ9NZ77k_5KOOBc4wMQ1d-u__IMYZkTSR04FCWTuTj_7IRtZPjlhdM13coynFtVSdNcKLNEgJEHslM9h8AN0J/s1600/dumpster+conv.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="404" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi83W70WAMMKv2z_AE7TeJHzs5X7QVgkCYBr1QVf2vRqshlQ3IiMCD1HL6WQ9NZ77k_5KOOBc4wMQ1d-u__IMYZkTSR04FCWTuTj_7IRtZPjlhdM13coynFtVSdNcKLNEgJEHslM9h8AN0J/s640/dumpster+conv.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
</div>
<ul style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">
<li><span style="font-size: small; line-height: 115%;"> Alternatively, you could print these questions on to separate A3 sheets and put them around your classroom. Groups can move between the 'talk stations'</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: small; line-height: 115%;">You could time the groups (use your phone or an online timer) to improve fluency (depends on your students but maybe 3-5 mins at each station).</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: small; line-height: 115%;">you could ask groups to write a 1 sentence summary of their thoughts and discussion on each A3 statement sheet - this leads nicely to a class feedback session when the discussion section is over: allocate a sheet to each group and ask them to summarise all the points on their sheet to the class.</span></li>
</ul>
<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">
<span style="font-size: small; line-height: 115%;">Extension:</span></div>
</div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">
<span style="font-size: small; line-height: 115%;">Students could write a magazine or blog article about the video and their thoughts on the topics discussed</span><span style="font-size: small; line-height: 115%;">.</span><br />

A video listening lesson based on The Apprentice TV show.<br />
<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">
</div>

<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<b>Listening > Vocabulary > Speaking</b></div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">
Lead-in:</div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">
a. Show a picture of Alan Sugar and ask students what they know about him.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; font-family: Verdana,sans-serif; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">
b. If students might have seen it, discuss The Apprentice, its set-up, format and the prize.</div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">
Lesson Plan:</div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">
a. Cut up the conversation and ask students to put it in order as they watch <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C6sP-wxdcos" target="_blank">the video</a>.</div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">
(or for more movement in a large class, give each student a line and ask them to order themselves as the video plays)</div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/C6sP-wxdcos" width="560"></iframe>
<br />
<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">
b. Once they have it in the right order, you could do some pronunciation work. Depending on the size of your class, give each student a line or two from the text. Play the video again and ask students to listen to the pronunciation of their line. Give students time to practise their line(s). As a class, read the text aloud; each student reads their line(s) in order, focusing on pronunciation.</div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">
c. Have students go back to the whole text and scan for the vocabulary. Then match to the definitions.</div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">
d. Finally, use the conversation to practise the vocabulary</div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">
Extension:</div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">
a. Discuss the show, whether students would like to enter, what tasks/roles they would find hard etc</div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">
b. Get students to create interview questions and then set up a group interview, 'firing' each other (if your class can handle it!)</div>

<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">This lesson is based on</span><br />
<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">
the Lonely Planet video about Mongolia<br />
and looks at travel and tourism destinations</div>
</div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">

<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<b>Listening > Vocabulary > Speaking > Reading> Debate </b></div>
<div style="font-family: inherit;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">
Lead-in:</div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">
Ask students what they think are the top 5 countries to visit in 2012 according to Lonely Planet.</div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">
Answers: 1. Uganda</div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">
2. Myanmar (Burma)</div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">
3. Ukraine</div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">
4. Jordan</div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">
5. Denmark</div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">
There are some beautiful pictures of these on the <a href="http://www.lonelyplanet.com/europe/travel-tips-and-articles/76856#" target="_blank">Lonely Planet's Best in Travel website</a>.</div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">
Skim Reading:</div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">
a. Put
the summaries of the 5 countries (download below) on your classroom walls and get pairs
or groups to walk around and skim read them, noting down the key reasons
why people should visit.</div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">b. Compare and check, then discuss which of these countries students have visited/ would visit and why. </span><br />
<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">
<br />
There is a great worksheet on vocab from these texts at <a href="http://www.englishcurrent.com/travel-tourist-destinations-advanced-esl-lesson-plan/" target="_blank">www.englishcurrent.com</a> </div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">
</div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">
<br />
Video: <br />
Discuss what the students know about Mongolia.</div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">
a. Pre-teach the vocabulary by getting students to match the words and definitions on the worksheet (you could cut these up). Go over pronunciation and stress on the words.</div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: inherit;">
<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">
b. Ask students to watch <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Hv09JoCE68" target="_blank">the video</a> and make notes under the topics on the worksheet.</div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/8Hv09JoCE68" width="420"></iframe>
</div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">
<br />
Extension: Students can work on the phrasal verbs and idioms whilst others finish note-taking.</div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">
c. Check answers and discuss any vocabulary that has come up.</div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">
d. Discuss whether students would like to visit.<br />
<br />
<br />
Speaking:<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"> Students can make their own "top 5 for 2012" list and give their reasons for their choices.</span></div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">
Extension:</div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">
a. Students could do a presentation on their own country <br />
b. Students could choose one of their "Top 5"and:<br />
<ul>
<li>write an article (this could be done on a blog to include photos and video)</li>
<li>create a podcast</li>
<li>create a video or a digital presentation using screencast </li>
</ul>
</div>

<br />
c. Students should now find the information missing from their worksheet in the text. <br />
<br />
c. Re-group the students into A-B pairs and get them to ask their questions and check their answers are right. (A has the answers for B on their worksheet in bold and visa-versa).<br />

A reading lesson based on the story of a boy who gets stuck in a tumble dryer.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<b>Reading > Vocabulary > Writing > Speaking</b>
<br />
<br />
Lead-in:<br />
a. Have students brainstorm an item in the house for every letter of the alphabet eg <i>a</i>...appliance <i>b</i>...bin <i>c</i>...cupboard etc<br />
b. Show the picture on a projector, if you have one, and get the students to discuss what the story might be about.<br />
<br />
Main Tasks:<br />
The main reading tasks follow the instructions on the worksheet. There are some vocabulary questions and reading comprehension questions. <br />
Students are also asked to write a summary of the text by choosing the key information.<br />
Finally, there is a discussion section for students to talk about the text and the situation.<br />
<br />
Follow-up:<br />
You could put your students in groups to make a TV news bulletin about the story; this could be as a role-play with 'mum', 'son', 'interviewer', 'fireman' etc being interviewed. You could extend this by videoing it and putting it on a blog for feedback.<br />
<br />
You could ask students to find a short newspaper article that they found funny and write a summary of it.<br />
They could find an online article and summarise on their blogs.<br />
